Medical professionals must complete several steps before surgery—one of the most critical being proper patient positioning. RAD Medical Technologies Inc, a member of the Life Sciences Innovation Hub, is addressing this need with products designed for orthopaedic procedures.

Danny Zahynacz, the Founder and President, spoke about the company’s upcoming lead product: a beach chair positioner used in orthopaedic shoulder surgeries to help improve patient outcomes.

“In essence, once the patient is asleep, you want to make sure they’re held in a very ergonomic position, that their airways open so they can breathe properly,” Danny says.

The product not only enhances patient well-being by ensuring proper airflow while unconscious, but also supports a diverse range of body types, helping to reduce the risk of soft-tissue damage during surgery.

Patients aren’t the only ones who benefit; the chair supports healthcare workers by making it easier to adjust patients during surgery, without bearing their full weight.

“When you’re positioning a patient’s body, it’s a very physical and demanding job,” he says. “And so, if you’re able to reduce lifting for nurses, you can help ease fatigue.”

Having over 15 years in the medical device field, Danny brings a wealth of knowledge to his startup. However, a challenge he found when starting his company was learning how to manage all these new responsibilities.

“It’s really tricky when you have so many conflicting roles and such limited time to figure out how to prioritize and balance your time,” he explains.

What helped him the most? Speaking with experts in the field.

“Talk to people in the industry, reach out to business advisors and technical advisors—sales, legal, financial—really anyone with that expertise that can help guide you,” Danny says.

RAD Medical Technologies Inc continues to grow and evolve while they support the healthcare sector with the development of medical device technologies, with Danny helping lead this effort as he works toward his five-year plan.

“I’d love to see our products used in more surgeries,” he says. “If we get more of these beach chairs out on the market, then we can start helping hundreds, then thousands, then tens of thousands of patients every single year.”
