Innovate Calgary, in collaboration with Alberta Innovates, is proud to release the comprehensive evaluation report for the Life Sciences Fellowship (LSF) program, documenting the impact of five successful cohorts. Designed to bridge the gap between academic research and highly technical expertise on one side and market readiness on the other, the program has proven to be a cornerstone of Alberta’s health and life sciences innovation ecosystem. While the LSF program concludes after five cohorts, this comprehensive independent analysis is designed to serve as a critical foundation and roadmap for the design of future health and life sciences innovation programs in the province.
Since its inception, the LSF program has supported 19 early-stage companies across diverse sectors, including medical devices, therapeutics, and medical software. By providing founders with $200,000 in non-dilutive funding, access to laboratory space at the Life Sciences Innovation Hub, and business coaching, the program has successfully transitioned technical talent into aspiring entrepreneurs.
Key Impact Highlights from the Five-Cohort Evaluation:
- Substantial Economic Leverage: Fellowship recipients secured $6.5 million in follow-on grant funding and $2.56 million in private investment, totaling over $9 million in additional capital to fuel the Alberta economy.
- Job Creation: The program directly contributed to the creation of 35 new high-skilled jobs within the province.
- Intellectual Property & Regulatory Success: Fellows achieved significant technical milestones, including 20 patent applications filed (4 issued) and 14 regulatory filings submitted to bodies such as Health Canada.
- Intensive Capacity Building: Participants benefited from over 2,478 hours of expert advising and 260 hours of professional development, covering critical domains like investment readiness and regulatory strategy.
“The Life Sciences Fellowship was established to ensure that Alberta’s world-class research doesn’t just stay in the lab but moves into the marketplace to solve real-world health challenges,” said John Wilson, President and CEO of Innovate Calgary. “By investing in the entrepreneurial talent behind the technology, we have built a pipeline of innovation leaders who are equipped to scale ventures and create long-term economic impact in our province.”
The report highlights the program’s unique role in providing early-stage risk capital—a critical gap in the life sciences sector—allowing founders a two-year runway to validate their technologies and attract venture capital.
By documenting both the successes and the structural challenges of the LSF, this report ensures that the expertise gained over the last several years remains a permanent asset for Alberta’s innovation leaders as they design more resilient and effective programs for the future.
