Introducing the Social Innovation Playbook: Unlocking Universities for Impact

Within the diverse and ever-evolving innovation landscape, universities hold significant potential as conveners, catalysts, and contributors to solutions that address complex social challenges.

We are proud to introduce the Unlocking Universities for Social Innovation Playbook, a resource designed to help post-secondary institutions strengthen their capacity to support social innovation as a core part of their innovation ecosystems.

Universities and research institutions are increasingly being called upon to do more than generate knowledge. There is a growing expectation that they will also help translate that knowledge into real-world outcomes, connecting research, innovation, and community priorities in ways that create tangible public value. Realizing this potential, however, requires coordination, supportive structures, and systems designed to move ideas beyond early discovery into meaningful application.

When universities intentionally create space for social innovation, they unlock the full potential of the knowledge, talent, and networks already within their institutions. This is not about replacing existing strengths in commercialization or technology development, but rather expanding the range of pathways through which impact can be achieved.

Developed by the Social Innovation Hub (SIH) in collaboration with Oxentia Ltd, the Unlocking Universities for Social Innovation Playbook draws on over a decade of experience and diverse real-world examples, to outline the cultural, institutional, and individual conditions that enable social innovation to take root and grow within university settings.

While this resource focuses specifically on the role of universities and how they can support researcher-social innovators, it is part of a wider effort to better understand how different parts of the innovation ecosystem can work together more effectively. As the SIH moves into its next phase, this release represents both a reflection on what has been learned and an invitation to continue building.

We’re grateful to the researchers, institutional leaders, and partners who have contributed their insights and experiences to this work. We look forward to seeing how the Playbook is used, adapted, and built upon in the months and years ahead.
